The following is some verse written by George Mansford AATTV on the passing of Jim. I knew Jim when I was in uniform and he was never worried about speaking his mind, no matter what the rank.  I will miss him as will many of his digger mates.

A Fond Salute to Lieutenant Colonel Jim Bourke (RL) AM, MG

Jimmy Bourke, True Blue (RAR-AATTV)
Did you ever meet a bloke so full of life?
Always with a huge grin, even in strife
Would often share his last smoke and tucker too
Never hesitant to speak up for the likes of me and you
In peace and war for causes he led many a band
Defeat and failure he never did understand
“Cannot be done” was never part of his game
Always challenging the system gave him justified fame
Above all, he was to you and me, true blue
A mate to be trusted to see any danger through
Already we are missing you, JB
Yet always will be those proud treasured memories
So many dawns and sunsets you shared with others
Such a great honour to have called you our brother
Luv ya mate

G'day Sirs.

I wish to advise that Robert (Bob) Bury, ex RAINF and a member of the Team,(my daughter-in-law's father) passed away early yesterday, 7th September (about 2.30am) at Pinewoods Nursing Home, Lawnton. He had suffered a severe stroke about three days before.

Bob's wife, June, predeceased him. His family have planned his funeral service for this Friday, 11th September, 2015, at Lakeview Chapel, Albany Creek. It will commence at 2.00pm. The service is being arranged by a funeral director at Kelvin Grove, Brisbane. Bob's daughters don't want a big fuss at the funeral, but I told my son they should have the funeral director contact a RSL Sub Branch for a Poppy Service.

I wanted at least you folk in the Association to know of his passing.

Kind regards

Hi Rick

Compliments of the season to you and yours. I am most pleased to get the WA newsletter along with others that indeed make good reading.

Anyhow, sad news to report. The Qld Branch members got together for our Christmas Lunch this year as we do and again in attendance was Mark Johnston, an AATTI Veteran and  son - in - law of our Team Member (WO1 RSM) Rex Taylor.

Rex was at the party in 2013 and full of life. But he has just spent time in Greenslopes for treatment for Lung Cancer and has since been discharged.

Mark said the Rex wanted us to know that he has perhaps only a few more weeks before he will leave us. I saddly announced this on our day and now wish you to advise the Team, on your net that Rex may not be with us for too much longer.

Will keep you in touch but respects may be sent to both myself and Pierre C.

Thanks Rick

Keep up the good work

Hello Everyone
A quick note to let you know that Ernie is having another spinal operation this coming Friday 7th November at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Fitzroy Melbourne. Most unfortunately his spine has significantly deteriorated above the spinal fusion he had six years ago. He has been in a bad way since late May so we are hoping this brings relief and enables him to increase his mobility.

We anticipate that he will attend inpatient rehab in a Melbourne facility as well so we expect to be away from Wagga Wagga for 4-6 weeks

We leave WW on Wednesday morning
I will not be accessing this email address and can be contacted on 0409394958 or maryhelenmartens@gmail.com

Please keep him in your thoughts over the coming days

We hope you have a lovely Christmas gathering and wish we could be with you all

Fond regards to you all

Team Member out of Hospital - Rick Ryan, AATTV

G’day all,

Just arrived back home after six days in Intensive Care Unit of the Fremantle Base Hospital here in WA after suffering a stroke on 25th October.

Very lucky boy and may not have been here had not Mandi recognised my symptoms last Saturday as being that of a stroke.  I awoke around 7am and when I spoke to her it was with a very slurred speech pattern.  I did not take too much notice as I thought I was just tired but after having a shave I walked out to the kitchen trying to put on a jumper.  Mandi noticed I was having trouble and asked if I was alright.  I answered in gooblygook (Slurring again) and started to get very wobbly on my legs.  Mandi sat me down and called 000 to get an ambulance.  She also noticed my left facial area beginning to fall.

Luckily for me Mandi works in the medical arena and she also got me to raise my arms but the left one collapsed.  This information was passed to triple 0  who agreed with her that I was having a stroke.

So after a trip to hospital with a couple of events in the ambulance with my stroke I was put in the best of care with all sorts of tests being done over the 6 days.  The nett result was that I had a stroke, a blood clot and a carotid artery which was 100 per cent closed.  No operation as considered too high risk.  The good thing is that I bounced back fairly quickly and regained all my co-ordination with no side effects at all.  The doctors put my fast recovery down to luck and the fact that I do keep myself reasonably fit for my age.

Bit of a wake up call and glad to have the chance to rebound and go on with life.  Just a few changes to my medications and a bit of follow up and I should be OK.

It all took me by surprise but the slurriness in my speech was the really dead give away to Mandi that something was wrong.

Take care and Persevere,

Rick

Hi Rick,

Sad news, Graham passed away last night approximately 11.30pm, 11th September 2014. The tending nurse told me that he died in his sleep and did not suffer. Thank god for that.

Graham's mortal remains have been collected by Elliott Funeral Services and as soon as the Doctor can sign the Death Certificate and confirm the Date of Death, Graham's body will be cremated. His ashes will go to the Grove in Canungra, for placing around his tree, as were his wishes.

For those who did not know Graham personally, He served in 1 RAR, first tour and 3/1 Bn out of Quang Tri second tour with the AATTV. He was a good Advisor and highly respected by the Bn Comd.

Graham has been in a Nursing Home in Adelaide for the past 3 years. I have been his Power of Attorney, Power of Guardianship and Executor of his Will and I now have to locate his 2 daughters who he has not had contact with for far too many years.

Hi Rick,

Just before lunch today the Doctor looking after Graham rang and informed me that there is no good news about Graham. Because he had a large build up of calcium in his system that was also affecting his diabetes, he suggested that there must be a growth somewhere. He had a couple of x-rays  yesterday and the Doctor has found that Graham has advanced Lung Cancer and that it has already moved through his body. He does not know how long he has, but he will not be going back to the Home. He may only have 2 weeks, then he could live longer.

Cheryl and I are going to Melbourne on Monday to see her Parkinson's Specialist, so we will drive to South Australia on Tuesday to see Graham.
Graham and I will have a long talk and I want him to put on paper his wishes and I will make sure that they are carried out.

We have paid for his Cremation and he wishes to have his ashes spread at his tree in the Grove at Canungra. I am going to Queensland in December for my brothers 50th Wedding Anniversary, so I will do it then, or ask the Team to do it when they can. But it will happen.

Please pass on this sad news to all, I will keep you informed.

Hi Rick and Mandy,

Please pass on to members that Graham has been admitted into Central District Hospital, Elizabeth South yesterday because his diabetic condition and liver problems are causing him problems. I have spoken to his Doctor and he reckons that Graham will be okay, just needs to again eat properly and recover from his present condition. Graham lost his balance and fell heavily and has been confused about his eating. He thinks he has eaten, but sleeps through the meal time, he really has not touched any food on his plate, that is why he has been hospitalised.

The phone no for the hospital is 0882504111, the switch will put you through to Graham's ward.

Good Day Rick
Would you please promulgate the following?

Welfare Report Frank Ghilotti
Elaine and I have just returned from Fremantle Hospital (PM Monday 9th June2014) where we visited Frank in ward 8 North room 14.  Although he is not out of the woods by a long way, he did look considerably better than he did last Friday his breathing is improved and colour much better, he is still in quite a deal of pain and discomfort and is on a continuous morphine drip.
Frank is in a critical care unit and is allowed visitors but no more than two at a time, he seems to enjoy having team mates visit. Frank had received a phone call from Bill Dunstan from over East and was really chuffed even though talking for more than a few seconds is difficult, Thanks Bill
John E Nolan

G’day all,

Team member in WA – Frank Ghilotti is in Fremantle Hospital after a motor vehicle accident on Tuesday, 3rd June.  Frank has broken  and fractured ribs, punctured lung and severe cuts and bruising and is in a serious but stable condition.  I spoke with son Shane this morning about the associated breathing problems with Frank while in his current condition.  Frank has been on oxygen bottles for the past few years and of course with the injuries sustained in the accident is being consistently monitored by hospital staff.

His wife, Jeanette also suffered severe bruising and has been released from hospital and resting at home and is in quite a bit of pain.  I spoke with Jeanette this afternoon and she is coping alright apart from the apparent concern as to Frank’s well being.

Frank’s mobile number is 0409 296 402 if members wish to make a call, however, I would suggest that calls be made from Sunday onwards as Frank is still in quite some pain.

Email messages can be sent to him on his email: j.ghilotti@bigpond.com

We all trust that Frank will be on the mend and out of hospital in the near future.

Take care and Persevere,

Rick

Book - Walk Tall with 2nd Battalion 1st ARVN Regiment

John  (Jack) Peel  describes the true fighting prowess of the 1st ARVN Regiment during the Vietnam War 1970 -71

The Vietnam War has gone down in history as one of the most unpopular wars ever waged by America and its allies. What makes it more tragic is the fact that the brave soldiers who took part in the war were not given the proper respect they deserved, indeed men who fought courageously and suffered through horrible ordeals on the battlefield were maligned by the media and misunderstood by the public. In “Walk Tall” the author has written a truly eye-opening read that shows the fighting spirit of the Vietnamese military units that served in the Vietnam War.

“Walk Tall” is an Australian’s view of ‘the American War’. It is an in-depth look at the Vietnam War wherein John Peel served as a member of the highly respected AATTV allocated to 1st ARVN Regiment. It records his experiences along with his perceptions on the Army of the Republic of Vietnam’s response to constant changes in policy, by reflecting on the character, culture and religion of the South Vietnamese soldier. It exposes the battles fought against their ideological enemy on one front, and the Saigon government on another, a government which ignored their cultural traditions threatening the soldier’s family by neglect.

The author has record his experiences as an embedded member of the South Vietnamese Army’s 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment, in order to reveal a highly proficient and professional fighting force, as the  result of  modern training, sound military leadership and the desire to get the job done on the battlefield. “Walk Tall” is a rarely seen alternative view point on the war in Vietnam and as such is a must read for anyone interested in military history.

About the Author
John Peel was born in Newcastle in 1943.  He attended the Newcastle Secondary Junior Technical School gaining an Intermediate Certificate in 1958. The following year, he enlisted as an Apprentice tradesman in the Army, graduating in 1961. From 1962 to 1969, he served in the Royal Australian Engineers Transportation Service as an Engine Room Watch Keeper in Army Small Ships and as an Instructor at the Transportation Centre RAE.  He volunteered for service with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in 1968. After training, he arrived in South Vietnam in 1970. During his eleven

month tour, he became the last member of the AATTV to serve with the 2nd Battalion 1st ARVN Regiment. Warrant Officer Peel was awarded the United States Army Commendation Medal and the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Silver Star as a result of his service. His interest in education and training resulted in the completion of a bachelor degree in 2010. He and his wife Carole live in a sleepy country village with his family close by. His interests include volunteer service as a pastoral volunteer at a local aged care facility. He continues his military interests as Chairman of the Royal Australian Engineers Vietnam Memorial committee at the School of Military Engineering. Sydney NSW.

A soldier died today

WO2 Raymond (Ray) Alexander Barnes, DCM, RAINF, AATTV

G’day all,

Sad news just in from Peter Conway, AATTV Qld Br on the passing on 21st April 2014 of fellow Team member, Raymond (Ray) Alexander Barnes,DCM RAINF.  Ray served with AATTV on his second tour of duty in South Vietnam from 25 Feb 1970.  Ray served as Platoon Commander, 212 Coy,2 MSF, 5th SFGA Mar – Apr 70, Company Commander 211 Coy, 2 MSF, Pleiku, May 70, then Jun 70 as Platoon Commander, 2 MSF, Pleiku and from Jul 70 to Feb 71,  MATT 2, Dat Do, Phuoc Tuy Province.  Ray’s first tour of duty was with 6RAR 6 Jun 66 to 14 Jun 67.

For his service with AATTV he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DCM).  The citation reads as follows:

Army Number:                      1410972
Rank:                                     Warrant Officer Class Two
Christian Name:                    Raymond Alexander
Surname:                               BARNES
Award:                                   DCM

Warrant Officer Barnes enlisted in the Australian Regular Army in October 1964.  He served with 6th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment in South Vietnam in 1966 and 1967.  He joined the Australian Army Training Team in Vietnam in February 1970 and from that time until 18 July 1970 he served with the 2nd Mobile Strike Force on operations in Pleiku and Kontum Provinces.
During the period 3 to 11 April, Warrant Officer Barnes served as Platoon commander in the 212th Mobile Strike Force Company on operations in the Dak Seang area of Kontum Province.  On many occasions during this operation Warrant Officer Barnes’ Platoon came under intense and continuous enemy fire and suffered many casualties.  On each occasion he moved about his area despite the heavy enemy mortar and small arms fire encouraging and inspiring his soldiers and directing their defensive preparations, withdrawal or assault activities.
During the period 10 to 31 May, Warrant Officer Barnes served as Company Commander of the 211th Mobile Strike Force Company again on operations in the Dak Seang area.  On several occasions the company came under intense enemy attacks and suffered many casualties.  On each occasion Warrant Officer Barnes was in full command of the situation.  From the 16th to 18th, the battalion was completely surrounded and very short of ammunition.  All enemy assaults to break into the area fell on the 211th Company.  On each occasion Warrant Officer Barnes moved to the forward edge of the company perimeter to co-ordinate his defence, evacuate his wounded, direct air and artillery support and re-allocate ammunition.  On one occasion he moved outside the unit perimeter to help carry back one of his wounded soldiers.
Throughout the entire period whilst in continual heavy contact with the enemy Warrant Officer Barnes displayed such outstanding qualities of leadership and bravery that despite the heavy casualties sustained, his company remained an effective fighting entity.
Warrant Officer Barnes has continued to display outstanding bravery and leadership.  His actions reflect great credit to himself, the Australian Army Training Team in Vietnam and the Australian Army.

Ray will be sadly missed by his fellow Team members and our deepest sympathies and sincerest sympathies go out to Audrey, family and friends on the sad occasion of his passing.

Funeral details are shown below in both Peter Conway’s email and the funeral notice from the Courier Mail today.

It is always sad to hear of the passing of one of our own but even harder when we have belated news.  I am sure that Team members pass on their deepest sympathies to Myrea, family and friends of Keith.
Messages can be passed through his grandson, Andrew on email: rustanroo@gmail.com

Also please refer to the message below from Andrew on the notification of the passing of Keith and his request for any photographs that Team members may have of Keith.

May Keith Rest In Peace,

Take care and Persevere,

Rick

Rest in Peace

Bruce

G'day all,

The following is an extract from the Herald/Sun article by Andrew Rule of 6th March 2014 and gives one an insight into the military life of Robbie.

Take care and Persevere,

Rick

IAN “Robbie” Robertson’s trouble was that he could shoot better than his mates. He was his battalion’s teenage photographer when it went to Japan with the occupying forces in 1946, and was still there in 1950. He might never have fired a shot in anger if North Korea hadn’t invaded the South that year.
Suddenly, Corporal Robertson was a sniper. His superiors knew the lanky kid from Preston was one of the best marksmen of the 600 troops in the battalion. His father had been a sniper at Gallipoli and had taught the boy to shoot rabbits in the paddocks around Preston to get the family through the Depression. It was one shot, one rabbit. Bullets cost money.
They gave him a modified version of the venerable .303 rifle that Diggers had lugged around since the Boer War. It had a small telescopic sight and a heavy barrel, and that was it. The rest was up to him. It was autumn. Nights were freezing; soon days would be, too. It was dirty, dangerous and deathly cold. Men’s lips stuck to metal mugs and some slept with their rifles to stop them freezing tight.
If the enemy didn’t kill you, the Australian uniform might: it was useless in the northern winter. Diggers begged, swapped or stole warm gear from the Americans. The only way Robertson could match “the Yanks” was with a rifle: he could group 15 rounds in a space the size of his hand at 300m, hit something the size of a football at double that range, and was pretty sure he could hit an enemy at a kilometre if conditions were right.
Not that long-range marksmanship helped much in his first brush with death.
Robbie and his mate, Lance Gully, were scouting ahead to draw fire away from officers they were escorting when Gully stumbled on 30 enemy troops hiding in a ditch. They pelted him with hand grenades but he kept shooting as he backed out.
Robbie ran in to help him. He recalled something an old Digger had told him about being ambushed by superior numbers: “Keep firing — if you give them time to think, they’ll kill you.”
He ran to the ditch and fired off six quick shots before running back to jam another clip into his rifle and doing it again — six times.
By some miracle, both Australians survived and none of the Koreans did. Historians call it a “skirmish” at the start of the Battle of the Apple Orchard.
Lance Gully was sidelined by grenade shrapnel and the boy from Preston got a new sniping partner, a reputation and the first of a lifetime of bad dreams.
By the time I met him more than 50 years later, he was still trying to forget the “Forgotten War” of the Korean Peninsula.
“When people are trying to kill you, it concentrates your mind; you don’t leave it behind,” he said.
Ian “Robbie” Robertson during his time as a marksman in the Army.
What he did leave behind were scores of dead enemy soldiers.
“I never did the arithmetic — I still don’t.”
He also took a lot of photographs — now held by the Australian War Memorial — but few action shots.
He saw things he refused to photograph. Once, they found a little church full of bodies. Men, women and children had been beaten to death. The enemy had first tortured the children in front of their parents to make the parents “confess” to something.
They found villagers bound hand and foot and dropped in latrine pits to die. In other places, victims were trussed with wire looping their necks to their legs so they strangled.
But there were also acts of courage and kindness, such as when Robbie’s battalion rescued a regiment of American paratroopers, out of ammunition and preparing to die when the Australians arrived.
“When the Yanks saw our big hats they let out a cheer because they thought we were Texans!” he recalled.
“We sailed into the enemy so hard they withdrew.”
When the US commander went home, he fenced off part of his ranch and put up a sign and an Australian flag in tribute.
There was Carl Whittaker, last man standing of 20 Australians mowed down in a bayonet charge. Whittaker shouldered two rifles, picked up his wounded mate and carried him to safety, then continued the charge alone.
While the enemy was distracted by the crazy-brave Australian, a reserve section was able to run across and take the position.
“He was worth two Victoria Crosses,” mused Robbie. “But he got nothing but a bawling out for stopping to pick up the wounded fella. It was against orders.”
THE more successful a sniper was, the more the enemy tried to kill him. Eventually the Koreans pinned Robbie down with artillery on a hillside and wounded him, and his war was over.
When he got out of hospital he went with some older ex-soldiers to the Preston RSL club and was refused entry. Korea “wasn’t a war — it was a police action” was the excuse.
Years later, after he’d served in Vietnam, the club invited the now retired Warrant Officer to join and he told them to go to hell.
He had married his Japanese sweetheart, Miki, and lived a quiet life and raised a family of daughters in a spotless brick veneer house in the northern suburbs.
He wrestled with his demons after Vietnam by taking up ballroom dancing. He also learned to ride and for years borrowed a police horse to ride in the Anzac march.
Over the years, the Army got him to go to training camps and teach young soldiers the deadly secrets of his trade. First he would teach them some dance steps to help their balance and rhythm.
For some reason they all liked the lean old bloke with the grey crew cut. That’s why there were so many of them in uniform at his funeral at Greensborough this week.
One of them read his favourite poem. It was called A Soldier Died Today.

G’day all,

Sad news just in from John Nolan, Welfare Officer of AATTV Association WA Branch  that fellow Team member,  WO2 M. (Merv) R. Bolitho, MID, RAINF, AATTV passed away on 20th December 2013 here in Perth, WA aged 78 years.  Merv served with AATTV in South Vietnam from 19 Nov 1968 to 5 Nov 1969.  Merv served with the Black Panther Coy, Hue, Thua Thien Province and was wounded in action in the A Shau Valley on 19 Jul 1969.  During his service with AATTV, Merv was awarded the Mentioned In Despatches (MID). A copy of his citation reads as follows:

Army Number:          5411664
Substantive Rank      Sergeant
Temporary Rank      Warrant Officer Class Two
Christian Name         Mervyn Richard
Honour or Award     MID

Warrant Officer Bolitho enlisted in the Australian Regular Army in 1953 and served with The Royal Australian Regiment in Korea and in Malaya.  He joined the Australian Army Training Team in Vietnam in November 1968.
For his full tour with the Training Team, Warrant Officer Bolitho served in operations with Hac-Bao (Black Panther) Company of the 1st Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam and for the majority of this time was the company’s senior adviser.  Only the best advisers were selected for this elite Company and it contained carefully selected Vietnamese soldiers. The company was tasked with special operations in some of the most difficult areas of Vietnam, including the Demilitarised Zone and the mountainous region  of the A-Shau Valley.  Warrant Officer Bolitho’s outstanding personal example and professional ability resulted in this small unit producing operational result previously thought unattainable.
During July 1969, the Hac-Bao Company was assigned to a search and destroy operation in the A-Shau Valley, adjacent to the Laotian border. On numerous occasions throughout his protracted operation, Warrant Officer Bolitho displayed outstanding leadership and personal bravery. He was constantly moving forward to the leading elements of the company while under enemy fire, encouraging the Vietnamese junior leaders and their soldier by his personal example. He was wounded during the operation, but refused to be evacuated until he ensured that the company was settled in a temporary defensive position. He returned to the field after only three days in hospital to continue the operation. His guidance to the Vietnamese Company Commander, and in the more hazardous situations his direct leadership and command of the company, in the actions involved in this operation were outstanding.
Warrant Officer Boltiho’s professional ability, his personal example and his devotion to duty throughout his operational tour with the Training Team were an inspiration to all who served with him and reflect great credit upon himself, the Australian Army Training Team and the Australian Army.

Merv was also awarded the US Bronze Star for Service for his time with AATTV in South Vietnam.

Most of us here in WA were aware that Merv was in poor health over the past years but he always continued his battles with his illness without complaint.  He will be sadly missed by his fellow Team members and our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathies go out to Jeffery, Debbie, family and friends on the sad occasion of his passing.

Funeral details will be advised once known.

Condolence messages for the family of Merv can be passed to John Nolan on email:  jono37939@bigpond.com

Dear Rick. Syd will be cremated here in Adelaide without a service and remains collected at a later date. We intend having a memorial service in Mandurah at a later date and all will be informed. Kevin Emberson will preside over the service as he is a celebrant and also a very good friend of our family for many years. Our family over here will probably have a wake at the Bath pub in Norwood as it was a favourite of Syd and our family for get togethers etc. This will possibly occur in next couple of days. Two of the boys will be driving the van back tomorrow as they have work commitments in the West. I will fly with the dog back later and live in the van until house is built as I intend to go ahead with it as Syd would have wanted. Also the dog and I need somewhere to live. The irony is I got an email from the builder that work is ready to start in a couple of weeks. We were both waiting for that info. Thank you very much for info etc and all you have done Rick. Will be in touch. Regards Ann Wells and tell Mike that I think he is right that we are not related, but you never know.

Subject: Re: We lost a true friend today

Hello again Mandi and Rick...
We were very moved when we read your beautiful tribute to your wonderful friend Macca and knew of your loss.      And what a loss it is.       He has been a wonderful friend and we’ve watched him from Port Macquarie on the east coast thanks to your pics and info.     We appreciate being part of your difficult time.   He was/is your ‘son’ and whilst we all know there are other folk suffering from incredible medical and personal problems which are probably considered to be insurmountable and on-going, it doesn’t help your awful empty feeling as a result of his departure.   Know it is all part of life, but a tough time.

Kevin and I know this because only days past we also farewelled our beautiful fourteen and a half year old RSPCA adoptee son Lucky Rowe...  an intelligent and caring little bloke who has occupied our hearts and time for over ten years.         We looked forward to enjoying his company for a long time to come but sadly as he became slower and older looking (like us) he was diagnosed as having a two inch tumour just above his little heart and also secondary cancer in his  clever little brain.       He had commenced having  frightening anxiety neurosis between l700 and 0600 hours and during those times I often remained on the floor all through those nights near to one of his beds in an endeavour to settle him.       He was up and down all night and terrified, not being able to settle in any of his beds and also being terrified of the dark.      He was suffering and had nature taken it’s course he would have incurred considerable pain.     Lucky departed for Doggie Heaven from my own lap when our caring vet visited our home recently.     We received a sensitive card in later days from that vet, who said old Lucky was a great little patient who tolerated all the vet handling and always came out of it with a smile and a tail wag..  he had also captured the hearts of that vet and his staff.

Poor Kevin didn’t deserve this stress at this time...  I’ve not yet advised you as  this year for us has moved at a rapid pace.         Whilst being in and out of hospital on many occasions during this year with negative cancer results after day or overnight exploration, his very perspicacious urologist finally  discovered a small stone in the bladder which caused occasional incontinence, he also found a “low, grey frilly growth” on the lining of the bladder.       A very aggressive cancer which had also progressed on to the lining of the prostate – in short, necessitating ten hours of massive surgery to remove both bladder and prostate, the creation of a stoma and addition of a urostomy bag, a loss of ten kilos after two kilos of surrounding material was also removed for pathology testing (all clear to date, and nothing at this time in liver, kidneys, lungs  or lymph glands).     Many other specialists were present during that full day surgery in September (due to the rare nature of the cancer breed) and during surgery after an  arterial spurt of 6 litres and much pandemonium in theatre, plus total  allergy resulting in incredible pain after both anaesthetic/s and all oral and epidural pain killers.      A busy time but in a good hospital and thankfully excellent specialists, Kevin has pulled through.      He is handling the new and complicated medical equipment which is now part of his life -  whilst he does not like it, he also accepts and laughs about the fact that he has for now avoided the alternative...  he would have been on the way to a funeral in six months if that little bladder stone had not been discovered.     He is for now one lucky man who has added to your statistics eh?

So for now Mandi and Rick, we do feel for you in your loss..   you have wonderful memories as we also do.      Hugs to you and also the Alpha Dog Harry.        Warm thoughts from both of us, Nerida Rowe x x

Sheila and I took Doreen and Doc to lunch last Wednesday.  Although Doc has lost more weight, he was bright responsive and ate well.  On Thursday night Doreen informed us that Doc had been re-admitted to Pindarra Hospital with severe Pneumonia.  He is not responsive to visitors at this time, so Doreen has asked that no visitors call.  Michael (their son) is Docs full time carer and can be contacted for an update if needed on 07 5580 8006.
Sheila and I will be away for the next couple of days visiting her father in Goonellabah and my cousin in Casino.  Her Dad is 91 years old today, is feeble and in a care facility at Goonellabah.

Talk to you later.

Fond memories of A Brother In Arms

Suddenly missing in our ranks is a beloved face

G'day all,

Sad news just in from John Nolan Welfare Officer AATTV WA Branch on the passing of fellow Team member WO2 D. 'Don' G, Cameron DCM,MM, RAINF.   Don passed away at 5.30pm, Sunday 15th September 2013 at Sandstrom Nursing Home, Mount Lawley, WA.

WO2 Don Cameron served with AATTV in South Vietnam from 21 Oct 1965 to Nov 65 at Mo Duc sub-sector, Quang Ngai, Dec 65 with Tra Bong sub-sector, Quang Ngai, Jan 66, 5th SFGA C Team, Danang.  Feb-Jul 66, Nung Force, 5th SFGA, Danang.  26 Aug 66 to Dalat for six weeks with his tour complete on 11 Oct 68.  On Don's second tour of duty with AATTV he served from 19 Feb 68 to May
68 as platoon commander 11th Company, 1st Battalion, 5th SFGA MSF Danang. Jun 68 as platoon commander 22nd Company, B-20, 5th SFGA, Pleiku. Jul-Sep 68 at Training Company, 2MSF. Sep-Oct 68 as company commander 211 Company, 5th SFGA,Pleiku an to 18 Nov 68, Training Officer, 2 MSF.

During his service with AATTV Don was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM).  Citation reads as follows:

Army Number:                        5410081
Substantive Rank:                  Sergeant
Temporary Rank:                  Warrant Officer Class Two
Christian Name:                     Donald George
Surname:                                 CAMERON
Honour or Award:                   DCM

Warrant Officer Cameron served with The Royal Australian Regiment in Korea, where he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery, and in Malaysia.  He served in South Vietnam with the Australian Army Training Team from October
1965 for one year and rejoined the Team in February 1968 as a Platoon Commander with No 11 Mobile Strike Force Company of the 5th Special Forces Group.
On 10 May 1968, No 11 Company was occupying an outpost at Ngok Tavak in Quang-Tin Province neat the Laotian border.  A North Vietnamese Battalion attacked and partially over-ran the outpost, isolating the command post from
Warrant Officer Cameron and the surviving defenders.   At dawn, Warrant
Officer Cameron organised and led a counter-attack which broke through the beleaguered command post and which eventually cleared the enemy from within the perimeter.  Under constant enemy fire, he calmly moved around the post reorganising the defences, controlling the clearing of pockets of resistance and encouraging and helping the Vietnamese soldiers.  His outstanding leadership and exemplary conduct under fire contributed greatly to the success of the defence.
On other occasions during his two years of service in South Vietnam Warrant Officer Cameron's professional ability, his bravery and his qualities of leadership have been of a high order and have brought great credit to him and the Australian Army.

In addition to Unit Citations awarded to AATTV, Don was also awarded the US Bronze Star for Valour (with 'V' Device) and the US Bronze Star for Service during his AATTV service.

Don was one of the most stalwart members of AATTV WA Branch and was a keen attendee at Team functions over many, many years.  He will be sorely missed not only by fellow Team members but also throughout the veteran community as one of our finest soldiers. Our deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences go out to family and friends on the sad occasion of his passing.

Condolence messages for the family of Don can be passed through John Nolan on email: jono37939@bigpond.com

Funeral details will be advised once known.

May Don Rest In Peace,

Take care and Persevere,

Rick

Result of CT Scan - Geoff Jenkin AATTV

G’day all,

News from Janet Jenkin wife of Geoff ‘Smiley’ Jenkin AATTV on his prostate cancer scan (refer below).

While it  is good news for Geoff, I ask that all Team members make sure they have regular checkups on their prostate.  There are far too many Vietnam veterans coming down with this form of cancer.  Quite a number in my area  sends a signal to me of this concern.  So chaps stay on top of this nasty cancer with just a little effort of seeing your doctor for PSA checks.  I can also advise that the PSA check alone is not the only solution to pick up the cancer.  A biopsy is sometimes required and is more certain to confirm any presence of the cancer.

As for Geoff we all wish him well for his forthcoming operation and for a speedy recovery.

You can email Smiley on:  jenkinjanet@gmail.com

Good Afternoon Fellow Members of the Team

It is with much sadness that we have to report the passing of  Warwick Martin Mc Fadden. Better known as “Mick”  or “Blue”. His son David rang me a short time ago to advise of Blue’s passing in Caboolture Hospital this AM.

Without any fear of doubt Blue was one of the most staunchest and loyal members of the Queensland Branch of the AATTV. He was also a very generous man having over many years donated plaques and had them installed at our Memorial Grove in memory of many of  his TEAM   mates who have marched on before him to the other side of the “Great Divide” In recent years Blue has been seriously ill, but he always made it along to our ANZAC Day and Team Birthday Memorial Service and did so to our most recent. He bore his cross with great fortitude and  courage and was never heard to complain.

He will be sadly missed. ,

Dear fellow Gunners,
Passing of LTCOL (Retd) W.D. 'Dai ' Thomas, RAA, AATTV
It is with great regret that I announce that one of our veteran Gunners, LTCOL (retd) W.D. 'Dai' Thomas, passed away earlier this week at Clare Holland House, after an extended battle with cancer.  I am advised that his passing was peaceful in the company of his family.
Dai was a member of of the distinguished AATTV, as well as his long service to the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery.
The funeral service for Dai will be held in the Chapel of Norwood Park Crematorium, 65 Sandford St, Mitchell on Saturday, 15 June 2013, commencing at 10.30am.
Dai was well known to, and held in high esteem by many Gunners, including MAJGEN (retd) J.P. Stevens AO, who has asked me to pass on this short message of remembrance:
Fellow Gunners,
I see in this morning's paper that Dai Thomas passed away on the weekend, and his funeral will take place at the Norwood Park Crematorium this coming Saturday at 1030hrs.
Some of you may have known Dai better than me, but I recall he was a British Gunner who came over to join us about the time of the Vietnam War, and stayed on thereafter.  When I met him again recently he had been living quietly in Canberra for the past 25 years or so, working away as an historical researcher, and maintaining a lively interest the Regiment through the Historical Society.
He was a Gentleman, and his passing is regretted.
Ubique,

AATTV Facebook Page

G’day all,

For those of you on Facebook, you may wish to join the Facebook group as explained by Col Chadwick AATTV.

When you get to the page, look up towards the left hand  side and you should see a link to click on: Australian Army Training Team Vietnam and that should take you to the Team Group page.

Also, you will need to be logged into your Facebook page to gain access.

Take care and Persevere,

Rick

Hi All
At the Reunion held last year in Brisbane/Canungra,Apart of the Padres (I think it was the Padre) speech made me sit up and listen.
The context was if you dont start talking to your children Grandchildren ect about your time in Vietnam and more specifically the AATTV Then in time no one will know of the AATTV as history will be lost.
I have given this a lot of thought over the last 11 months or so and wondered what i could do to further this statement that rang true to me.I thought i could tell my family about my time with the team and i did. However i felt that my story on its own pales into igsignificance not for any other reason except i was only one of the 1000 men.
I searched everywhere and could not find a full history of the Team.Sure there are publications about but none that show too many individual picture stories.
I looked at various ways in which i thought i could best do something.I therefore have decided that i would start a Facebook group called The Australian Army Training Team Vietnam which i hope will be use by many ex members and their families.I envisaged that in this techno savvy times we are in it might be a good time to hand the photos and pics over to the younger ones and they can put the pics up on the facebook page for all to see.
I hope I am not treading on anyones toes but i figure its a way of keeping our story alive.
The  link to the group is https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/AATTV/members/
you just need to copy and paste this into your browser.
PleaseI pass this around to your various networks and lets all share

Regards Col Chadwick

G’day all,

Sad news in from Chris Boileau (son of Guy Boileau,) informing us that  Guy passed away on 8th February 2013.  Capt (later Lt Col) Guy F. Boileau RAINF served with AATTV in South Vietnam from 2 Jul 1963 to 4 Jun 64 with  CSD Programs, Danang Base operations in Quang Tin and Quang Ngai.

Our deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences go out to Judith, family and friends on this sad occasion.  There would be many Team members that knew Guy during his military service and he will be sorely missed. Condolence messages can be passed to Judith and the family on email:boileaux@waterfront.net.au

Both Mandi and I knew Guy during our military service and Mandi did at one time serve with him, a great friend for many, many years.

Funeral details will be advised once known.

May Guy Rest In Peace,

Take care and Persevere,

Rick

Hi Bruce,

Can you please relay the news that my father passed away yesterday afternoon?

Dad was surrounded by mum (Judy) and all his 5 kids and the in-laws. He died peacefully and without pain. Some of the Team may be surprised that dad was a model patient at the Epworth ICU. Rarely, if ever, complaining and generally doing what he was told! He was stoic, dignified and retained his humour to the end.

The details of the Requiem service have not been confirmed but it is likely to be held on Thursday or Friday next week in Melbourne followed by drinks at the Heroes (Toorak RSL). We'll confirm this on Monday or Tuesday.

If possible, could you please cc mum on your email?

Also, if anyone has Jude Healy's or John Rowe's contact details, can they please pass them on to mum (boileaux@waterfront.net.au).

PS A few members of the Team and RMC classmates have relayed some stories involving dad (not attached) which the family has enjoyed. If anyone has any other stories, anecdotes, quirky pieces of information, the family would love to receive them (chrisboileau1@gmail.com) for the service and a little book for the family. They can call me directly and test my typing skills/speed if they would prefer to talk rather than type. Any photos would be very nice too.

I have CC'd a few people who have contacted me directly. I wasn't sure if they were on your normal mailing list or had your email last week relayed to them. Apologies if I have broken protocol!

Many thanks,

Chris (0413-660-351)

I'm Chris Boileau, one of Guy's 2 sons. I think we may have met once or twice at Team gatherings...

Mum suggested I let you know that Guy is seriously ill. He's in Intensive Care at the Epworth in Richmond with respiratory / lung problems. He's been in and out of hospital the past few months and the outlook is not great. Unfortunately, I don't think Dad is well enough for visitors.

Could you please pass this news on to the Team and anyone else you think relevant?

The email is chrisboileau1@gmail.com  (This is mum and dad's email address So people could respond to this email address if they'd like to leave mum a message.)

Thanks for your help,

A soldier died today

WO2 George (Geordie) Y. Jamieson MID, RAINF, AATTV

G’day all, G’day all,

More sad news just in from Peter Conway AATTV on the passing of fellow Team member WO2 George (Geordie) Y. Jamieson MID, RAINF, AATTV.on 12th Jan 2013.  Geordie served with AATTV in South Vietnam from 7 Oct 1965 with 2/51 ARVN, Quang Nam and from Nov 65 to Sep 66 with 3/5 ARVN, 2nd Division, Quang Ngai, RTA 27 Sep66.  Geordie was accidentally wounded by grenade on 13 Aug 66.

Geordie  served a second tour of duty with AATTV from 5 Dec 67 to Dec 68with 3/5 ARVN, Tam Ky and Quang Ngai Jan to Oct 69, Mobile Training Team, PRU Central Highlands, Nha Trang base and from Nov 69 to Apr 70, 5th SFGA, platoon commander, 2nd MF Battalion, Pleiku.  Geordie was wounded in action (WIA) on 8 Apr 70 and again on 11 Apr 70 and medically evacuated to Australia on 4 May 70.

Geordie was awarded a Mentioned in despatches (MID) for his service with AATTV, the citation read as follows:

Warrant Officer Jamieson enlisted in the Australian Regular Army in 1958.  He served with The Royal Australian Regiment in Malaysia from 1962 to 1964.  He joined the Australian Army Training Team in Vietnam in October 1965 and rejoined it in December 1967.
During three and a half year’s service in the Australian Army Training Team, Warrant Officer Jamieson served as an adviser with the Army of the Republic of Vietnam unit and with indigenous para-military forces.  He joined the 2nd Mobile Strike Force in Pleiku as a Platoon Commander in November 1969.
Warrant Officer Jamieson worked tirelessly and with complete disregard for his own safety and welfare throughout the whole of his Vietnam service.  His efforts were instrumental in raising the standards of the units in which he served.  His self acquired understanding of Vietnamese and Montagnard custom, people, and language was a tremendous asset which enable him to excel both as and adviser ad as a Commander.
During operations in Pleiku on 8 April 1970, Warrant Officer Jamieson was wounded.  Despite his wounds, he continued to lead and encourage his indigenous soldiers for three days until he was more seriously wounded and was evacuated from the battle field.
Warrant Officer Jamieson’s professional ability, loyalty, leadership and courage under fire during an extended period with the Australian Army Training Team have been outstanding and reflect great credit on himself, the Australian Army Training Team and the Australian Army.

Other foreign awards included the United States Valorous Unit Award (VAU) and the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star.

All Team members pass on their deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences to family and friends of Geordie on this sad occasion.  He will be sadly missed by us all.

Please pass any condolence message through Peter Conway AATTV on email: plconway@nnsw.quik.com.au

Dear family & friends,

With great sadness I must report that our Dad Roy lost his battle with cancer this morning at approximately 08:15 hrs.  Dad’s passing was peaceful and he didn’t suffer too much thanks to modern pain management nursing.

This is a devastating blow to our family who love him so dearly.  Dad was a huge personality in life and he had a great impact on those who loved, cared, worked and fought alongside of him.  I just can’t say enough how proud we are of him.

Dad’s army mates Phil ‘Butch’ Buttigieg & Chas Heyward have provided tremendous support to Dad during his illness and this loyalty and mateship will never be forgotten.  The true ANZAC spirit continues shining to the end no matter what.

We sincerely thank you all for your support of Dad in his life and we regard you all as a part of the Chamberlain family forever.

I will advise ASAP regarding the arrangements for Dad.

Kindest regards,

Peter Chamberlain

Hello Des,

Thanks for asking about my  progress.
I’m recovering, slowly. Done away with the wheelchair, and try to rely on the walking stick as little as possible. Blue Care Nurses change my
“wound” dressings twice a week and tell me they’ll be finished with me by ANZAC Day, so I should be able to march (stagger?) with the rest.

It’s been a long, long, trip; 6 months in hospital where they wanted to chop the leg off, 68 weeks now as an out-patient, and a few months
to go, but I’m starting to believe in that light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel !!

Regards................Wally

P.S; Feel free to pass this on to whoever asks about my state, as I don’t have everyone’s address and don’t know who cares.

Dear family & friends,

As you are aware my Dad Roy is in the last stages of his battle with cancer but I’m proud to advise he is conducting his “last operation” in an exemplary strategic fashion making us even more proud to love and know him.  He is not scared and as he says “there’s heaps of people I love waiting for me up there”.  He also says he is “a tiny bit worried there might be a few NVA & VC waiting to speak with him up there however”.

Due to his medication Dad is at home sleeping most of the time now and unfortunately he is no longer able to take phone calls or have visitors other than his immediate family and his closest of friends at hand.

Dad says he has achieved everything he wanted to in life already including the best wife ever Glenda, Kylie & I (his kids & brats some might say) and 4 x grandkids Tommy, Benny, Jazzy & Liam who just love their Poppy so much.

Dad is in good hands here at home in Caloundra “in his fart sack” just the way he likes it.

As an army Son I have read a lot of war history but Vietnam Veterans are my heroes and I’m so proud Dad is one.

Dad loves you all!

Keep you posted.

Following the last email from Doc Judd, he has advised me that he will now not be undergoing chemo or radiation treatment.  His doctor has given him until Christmas to live.

Obviously this is not good news but I accept that Doc can make his own judgement on his health after discussions with his doctor.

We all wish that Doc is comfortable while facing this battle.

Messages for Doc can be sent to the email address as shown below.

G’day all,

Doc will start chemo treatment from 27 Nov 12 and this will continue for 6 weeks.

Obviously the news was not good but let us hope that the radiation treatment does the trick.

Team Member in Hospital - John Barnes, AATTV

G'day all,

Cheryl has coped well during the emergency and is very happy with John's progress.

As to the future, John agrees he will more than likely relinquish some of the activities he has been involved in - on a selective basis.

All in all we look forward to seeing he and Cheryl at our AGM at Ocean Grove, Feb '13.

I have spoken to John this evening.

He has had a severe heart attack but has survived well and is now ensconched in the Royal Melbourne Hospital (Private).

John is due to have a defibulator fitted in the next day or two and is quite relaxed about his situation at this time as is Cheryl to whom I also spoke to.

John has a bed side phone 03 8341 3465 or Cheryl can be contacted on 03 5021 2925.

Persevere,

John Vincent

Good Afternoon Rick

As you know I have been keeping in regular contact with Bernie. He is now being looked after by Leslie at her home.

He will be seeing the oncologist again tomorrow.

In my most recent conversation  (this AM)  he stated that quote “he was holding his own against the tide”

He is very ill, nauseous and having difficulty in eating, but maintaining a very courageous and positive outlook but ?

Those who may have a message for Bernie are requested to pass same through me and I will ensure it is passed on

Kind Regards

Pierre
