Just got out of hospital, after spending 10 days on my back on a drip and anti-biotics,  from a bout of pneumonia which combined with my various cancer problems (prostate, spine and rib cage) did me no good at all!

Good way to lose weigh I guess and managed that without even trying

Accordingly I now need to cut back on my total input/output on things Veteran and email generally!

From today please only send me matters directly relative to Veterans and their entitlements, past, present and future!

This means no jokes, funnies, jpg and pics in whatever format etc etc!

Sad news just in from Doug Tear AATTV and Simon Hearder AATTV on the passing of one of our own on 12th October 2012, 22424 WO2 later Major Barry J. Sullivan, RAINF.  Barry served with AATTV in South Vietnam from 24 May 1963, he was with Tactics Committee, Hiep Khanh Training Centre from Jun – Nov 63. Dec 63 attached 7th SFG team A-727, Khe Sanh and from Jan – Mar 64, Tactics & Weapons Committees, Hiep Khanh Training Centre.  RTA on 4 Apr 1964.

Barry, as pointed out by Simon Hearder was Secretary, of AATTV NSW Branch  for many years.  He regularly communicated with me as to the status of NSW Team members and he will be sorely missed by all.  Team members pass their deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences to Marjorie, family and friends on this sad occasion.  Barry had been hospitalised of late.

Extract from Gold Coast Bulletin today on Robbie Robinson's funeral details.  It reads as follows:

Robinson, (Robbie) Arthur, DCM BEM JP Late of Benowa and formerly of Surfers Paradise, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, 10th October, 2012.
Aged 84 years.
Loving husband of Valda (deceased) & much loved father and father in law to Vicki & Neil, Kane & Kate and adored grandfather to Kayl & Tesse.
Warrant Officer Arthur Robinson was a highly decorated and respected Veteran loved by so many on the coast & abroad.  He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held for Robbie on Friday, 19th October, 2012 in the Integrity Chapel, 18 Tonga Place, Parkwood commencing at 11.00am.

Sad news just in on the passing today on the Gold Coast, Qld of one of our own, 2412487 WO2 Arthur (Robbie) R. Robinson RAA (Special List) DCM, BEM. Robbie served with AATTV in South Vietnam from 11 Dec 67 to 3 Dec 68.  He served with 11 Battalion ARVN Artillery, Quang Tri during Dec 67 and Jan 68, from Feb to Jul 68 with 1/1 ARVN, 1st Division, Quang Tri area and from Aug – Nov 68 with Duc My Ranger Training Centre.

During his service with AATTV, Robbie was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM).  His citation reads as follows:

After enlisting in the Australian Regular Army in 1950 Warrant Officer Robinson served in several appointments as a physical training instructor until his discharge in 1963.  He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1957 for his outstanding service.  He rejoined the Regular Army in 1966 and was posted to Vietnam to the Australian Army Training Team in  December 1967.
On 1 March 1968 Warrant Officer Robinson was an adviser to the 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment, Army of the Republic of Vietnam which was on a search and clear operation in Quang Tri Province.  The Battalion encountered an entrenched North Vietnamese Battalion and became pinned down by heavy and accurate enemy fire.  During a critical phase of the battle a rifle Company on the left flank of the Battalion was forced to withdraw creating a precarious situation.  Warrant Officer Robinson quickly realised that the company must go forward and retake the lost ground before the enemy reacted.  Disregarding the heavy enemy fire he moved across to the company, reorganised them and personally led the assault which recaptured the lost ground.  Under enemy fire he carried to safety a seriously wounded soldier, possibly saving the soldier’s life.  Warrant Officer Robinson’s bravery and devotion to duty were an inspiration to the Vietnamese soldiers and contributed significantly to the success of this operation in which 129 enemy were killed.  On a number of other occasions he has shown exemplary conduct under fire and his professionalism and outstanding leadership have earned the respect and admiration of those who have served with him.

In addition to several Unit Citations, other foreign awards made to Robbie for his service with AATTV include, US Silver Star, RVN Cross of Gallantry with Gold Star, RVN Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star.

All fellow Team members pass their deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences to his family members and close friends of Robbie on this sad occasion. Robbie was a well known and respected member of AATTV and he personally held the Team in high regard.

I have made a few phone calls and tracked him down to The Mater Private.

I just called and spoke to him and he is quite ill with pneumonia and it is highly likely that he will be there for at least another week, possibly two.

Sad news just in from Peter Conway, AATTV Queensland Branch on the passing today, 21st September 2012 of fellow Team member 13604 WO2 Don Lord, RAINF.  Don served with AATTV in South Vietnam from  27 Apr 67 to 30 Apr 68 at first with Montagnard Company and then variously company and platoon commander, 11th Company Mike Force, 5th SFGA, Danang. Don was also one of the Team members entitled to wear the US Presidential Unit Citation for services with 5th SFGA.

Team members pass on their deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Don on this sad occasion.  As stated by Peter Conway , Don Lord was a highly respected Team member and he will be sorely missed.

Hello Doug,

Thanks for your telephone call yesterday.  Good to talk to you again.

As discussed, I visited our esteemed Team Member yesterday for about and hour and a half and was pleased to see him in good spirits reading out in the court-yard, in his "special" chair.  I must say I was somewhat surprised to see him in such fair condition considering his recent history of three strokes etc.  Past experiences of mine, visiting family and friends who were stroke victims, have not been so pleasant.
His articulation was good along with his comprehension of matters current and past.  We spoke of our time in SVN and of people we both knew on the Team; in Vietnam and the military generally.  Our discussions were interesting and often expressed with humour.  The odd laugh or two from him was good.  He is an ardent reader (loves military history stuff) so I will take him a few books that I have on the subject.  He has read Bruce Davies new book 'Vietnam' three times!  I took him a collection of photographs taken during my time in SVN and some of the 50th Re-union to look at. It pleased him somewhat.  He was upset that he missed the 50th Anniversary so, along with the afore-mentioned, I will get a copy of the group photograph taken at Canungra.
Bob is well received by the staff at the Home and gets on well with other residents (some are ex-military).  That's a good sign!  He is proud of being a Vietnam Digger and sports memorabilia on his Vietnam Vets baseball cap.  He has had Roxanne stitch a DCM ribband on it.   He does not have a Team Cap, so I will take him up one along with an AATTV collar badge.
You are aware of his personal side of life and especially the loss of his service medals, which particularly and emotionally disturbs him.  Hopefully Roxanne can get a resolve on that matter soon.
He is keen to be moved back to Sydney and is looking forward to a vacancy being available soon.
As indicated above, I will be re-visiting Bob at least one-two times a week and I will keep you informed in the event of any change.  I know that you are in touch with Roxanne regularly so no doubt you will be kept well informed of his welfare.

Review – Vietnam – The Complete Story of the Australian War

It has been quite some time since I have read such and honest and open account of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Many years ago, I did read a book called ‘About Face – the Odyssey of an American Warrior’ by Colonel David Hackworth (US Army, Ret) and formed the opinion that this book should be made compulsory reading by all junior officers aspiring to be future leaders of our men in combat.  Bruce Davies assisted ably by Gary McKay has produced a book that is in the same category. It also should be compulsory reading by not only our junior leaders but by our Commanders as well.  Rather direct and without bias, it is compelling reading that dispels some of the myths perpetrated since the Vietnam War by a well researched history of those involved, be they friend or foe.

For Australian veterans of the Vietnam War, many may feel that they were very lucky at the outcome of some of the actions in which they were involved after reading this book.  Outcomes that could have been so very different if it had not been for good fortune as opposed to poor tactical decisions made by some commanders. The book not only covers the main Australian elements but also those activities of AATTV members spread throughout the length and breadth of South Vietnam. In conclusion, it identifies the necessity for all commanders to be well researched and versed in the tactics of their opponents, something that could be said to be missing at certain stages of this war.

Sad and  belated news  in on the passing of fellow Team Member Cpl G. (Gerry) W. Woodruff, RAAMC, AATTV on 19th June 2012.  Gerry served with AATTV in South Vietnam from Nov 70 at Advisers  School, Di An. Dec 70 to Feb 71 with MATT 11, Long Dien,  Mar – Apr 71, MATT 2 , Dat Do, May-Jun 71, MATT, Phuoc Tuy, Jul 71, JWTC Nui Dat and from Aug – Sep 71, MATT, Phuoc Tuy.  Gerry also served in South Vietnam with HQ 1ATF from 10 May 67 to 21 May 68.

Team members were only notified of Gerry's passing while attending the AATTV 50th Anniversary Reunion in Qld in which Gerry was expected to attend.  Gerry's remains were cremated at Karrakatta cementry, WA on 29th June 2012.

Our deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences go out to his brother Arthur and friends of Gerry.  He will be sadly missed by fellow Team members.  Gerry was a stalwart member of AATTV WA Branch and regularly attended their functions.

The only condolence message I could locate was this from the West Australian published on June 23, 2012. 18 of 18 words: "WOODRUFF (Gerard W): Died suddenly 19th June aged 67. Brother of Arthur. Sadly missed by his many friends."

Sad but not unexpected news just in from Peter Conway, AATTV on the passing today 8th July 2012 of fellow Team member, WO2 R. (Jock) B.D. Rutherford, MM RAINF.  Jock’s first tour of duty in South Vietnam was with 6RAR from 4 Jun 66 to 14 Jun 67 and was awarded the MM whilst serving with 6RAR.  His service with AATTV started on 7 Jan 71 as unallotted MATT, MRIII, from Feb – Apr 71 with MATT6, Hoa Long and from Mar to 26 Oct 71 with MATT, Phuoc Tuy.

Jock a well respected member of the Team had been ill for quite a while and he will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.  Our deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences go out to Shirley, family and friends on this sad occasion.  Email condolence messages can be directed to Shirley on email: boydann@bigpond.com

Funeral details will be advised once known.

Extract of Award of MM to Jock is as follows:

“On 25 July 1966, 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment was engaged on a Search and Destroy  Operation in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam.  Corporal Rutherford was a Section Commander in B Company.
In the early afternoon of that day an enemy force of well-trained and well-led  Viet Cong  guerrilla forces contacted B Company in a hastily organized mission.
Corporal Rutherford’s  platoon bore the brunt of the subsequent enemy attacks and suffered during the short fierce engagement ten casualties, including the Platoon Sergeant.  Corporal Rutherford, on his own initiative, immediately took over as Platoon Sergeant.
During the close and very heavy fire fight and mortaring which ensued, he moved with complete disregard for his own safety around the weapon pits tending to the casualties and the administration of the platoon. He moved forward to assist a wounded soldier but was driven back by heavy fire falling around him. Nevertheless he persevered and again moved forward to dress the wounds of the casualty and pulled him back to his own shell scrape for safety. He continued to assist the wounded in this manner.
In addition he took on himself the task of distributing ammunition to these positions where ammunition was running low, and exposed himself to enemy fire whilst doing so.
Throughout the action he continued to control fire and give orders in such a calm and confident manner as to inspire and encourage the men under his command.
Corporal Rutherford’s actions were outstanding and he took far greater risks with his life than his duties as a Section Commander required.  His inspiration to all present by his actions and his timely and effectively treatment of the casualties deserve permanent recognition.”

Hello Bernie,

Some veterans may be interested as I understand that some were asking of me. I have been off the air for several months and will continue for another several.

I have just come home from a months stay (my 4th time in hospital since March) from the Sans Hospital in Wahroonga Sydney and recovering quite well - so far. On this occasion I had open heart surgery with 5, yes 5 by-passes performed by the brilliant Professor Chard, director of the Cardiology unit at Westmead Hospital. A huge shock as I got DVT which went to my lungs when I got off the plane from Shanghai and I was having Angina attacks, but thought the pain was my lungs!!! I am a very lucky man indeed as it was my urologist who picked up on it and told me to see my Cardiologist immediately.

I am currently an outpatient at the Lady Davidson Rehabilitation Hospital in North Turramurra until I go back into the San to have my cancerous Prostate removed by robotic surgery on the 1st July (Sunday). Australia's imminent surgeon, Dr Peter Sutherland from Adelaide is coming up to perform it. I am indeed lucky.

So mate, there it is.

How are you travelling these days? I trust you and your family are well. I am now catching up on all of your emails.

Reg Bandy suffered a nasty turn and was admitted to Hollywood Private Hospital last Monday where he has been undergoing a series of tests to ascertain exactly what the problem is he hopes to have some of the results Monday 18th he is also scheduled for a full body scan early next week. He is in the Gordon Ward and can receive visitors and phone calls.

Don Cameron has settled into the Sandstrom Nursing Home at Mount Lawley, directly opposite the Mt Lawley railway station, his physical condition continues to improve with regular physiotherapy, unfortunately he does have periods of confusion, however he often talks about his desire to attend the 50th in Brisbane. Don yesterday told me to ask George Mansford if he still had the compass he gave him?

Merve Bolitho  is currently in AEGIS Ascot Transitional care centre in Bayswater whilst his family negotiate a permanent place for him in a care unit. Merv’s general condition has markedly improved and he is taking an keen interest in the activities of the unit. He has asked me if I can find him a Bingo Cage and balls if anyone knows where these can be obtained let me know

Brigadier Lloyd is in Hollywood Private Hospital with a fractured leg. It has been requested that he be not contacted directly at this point, any enquiries should be directed through Tony Thorp 08 95251294. tonythorp@westnet.com.au

An update for Boyd(Jock) Rutherford. Jock is now in high care at Chelsea RSL homes in Maryborough.  Dementia has really kicked in and it is hard to know of what his awareness level is but I got the distinct impression he wanted out of the place. I wore my Team polo necked shirt this morning and he kept putting his finger on the AATTV badge so there must still be a bit of a spark there. Shirley is holding up but as you can imagine it is a sad time for her after 53 three years of marriage.     If anything changes I will let you know.

Just to let you know and perhaps you can put it on the website that Jock Rutherford has been in Greenslopes hospital now for a few weeks and has been diagnosed with Lung cancer and also a secondary one in is ribs.  He was originally admitted with pneumonia which he has had improvement with that but this cancer was subsequently diagnosed. I know that the Queensland Branch is aware and have been visiting but I would like you to let the wider Team people know the situation.  His wife Shirley has been handling the situation as well as can be expected.    Very sad to say the least. Both Jock and Shirley live a few minutes away from me so have been in the unfortunate position to watch his deteriorate  over the last few years. A good man with a good wife.

Dons general condition has stabilised somewhat and he has now been transferred to the Reconstructive Unit at Mercy hospital Maylands, he is now able to have visitors, the hospital is only a short downhill walk from Mt Lawley railway station.

Don has not been in the best of health for some time now and this latest battle will be his biggest yet.

Sad news just in from Peter Conway, AATTV Qld Branch on the passing on 12th May 2012 of WO2 (later WO1) Trevor E. Gilliver, RAINF, AATTV.  Trevor served in AATTV in South Vietnam from 26 March 1967 to 26 March 1968 with postings to B50, Project Omega, 5th SFGA, Nha Trang  Apr - Oct 67and then as a platoon commander and acting company Executive Officer in 23rd Company, B20 Mobile Strike Force, Pleiku. He was the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 4th Battalion, the Royal NSW Regiment from 1977 to 1981 and awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to Army Reserve training on 26 January 1981.

All Team members pass on their deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Trevor.  Trevor had been in hospital in a verious serious condition just of late.

Hi All,

I visited Des today at Greenslopes. The operation appears to have gone well all vital signs are okay and he is resting well in intensive care where he expected to be for the remainder of the week. Des has been given some relaxants, didn’t wake whilst I was there, however it appears he was our Des last night and this morning which is a good sign.

David reports that the funeral of Wally Thompson OAM is to be conducted at the Church of the Holy Trinity commonly called “The Garrison Church”?, corner of Argyle and Lower Fort St Millers Point on Friday 27 April 2012.

The service will commence at 11.00 am and will be a full military funeral with full military honours. It is requested that coat and medals be worn as applicable.

After the church service Wally will be cremated at Macquarie Park Crematorium, Camellial Chapel 1330hrs,  at the corner of Delhi Rd and Plassey Rd, North Ryde.

The wake will then be held at the  Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL, near the Corner of Old Canterbury Rd and New Canterbury Rd, Hurlstone Park

Dear members,

Our old RSM Warrant Officer Wally Thompson sadly passed away at 1.00 pm at the Bankstown Hospital in Sydney on Thursday 19 April 2012. He went as he lived; quietly and with dignity. His wife Judy was aware and his family of Katherine, Elizabeth, Scott and Brett were present. Wally sadly had developed cancer which was incurable.

The RSM – Army is preparing the military funeral for Wally and it is believed that it will be held in the Sydney CBD. As soon as the planning is finalised the RSM –A will inform all associations of the details. A tribute to Wally from the 4 RAR Assoc, Qld Inc is attached.

Wally may well be regarded as the father figure of the Infantry especially to the junior soldiers. The stories about Wally and his professionalism, dedication and loyalty are many and it is a not uncommon for any soldier of whatever corps to exclaim when Wallys name came up, I remember when Wally .............., such was the stamp of the man. I, like many others, have fond recollections of Wally and could tell a few stories but now is not the time or place.

I believe that there is not a soldier that can state that he was not called mate by Wally some time in his career and that there was not one superior officer who did not call Wally, mate. Wally was a mate in the truest sense of the word and Wally was a soldier. Farewell old mate, farewell old soldier.

Wally served with AATTV in South Vietnam from Aug 64 to Feb 65 with 2nd ARVN Division, Quang Nam and with RF/PF Hoi An, Quang Nam Mar - Apr 65 returning to Australia in May 65. Warrant Officer Class Two Wallace Thompson, Company Sergeant Major of C Company, 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, enlisted in the Australian Regular Army in May 1954. He had previously served in Vietnam with The Australian Army Training Team in 1964-1965 and arrived for his second tour in April 1968.
During five major Company contacts between May and November 1968, Warrant Officer Thompson had the responsibility for arranging the evacuation of the wounded by air. On each occasion, the company has been in close contact with the enemy and Warrant Officer Thompson's calmness under fire and disregard for his own safety at all times has enabled his task to be carried out efficiently and without further casualties.
In addition, on 8 October 1968 he controlled the fire of a succession of six helicopter gunships called in to give close support when his Company Commander and the forward platoon were in close contact with the enemy at a range of 15 metres and under extremely accurate and damaging machine gun and small arms fire. Warrant Officer Thompson controlled the gunships with the professional skill and confidence and his appreciation of their use permitted the forward elements of his company to successfully break contact without further losses.
n handling these most difficult tasks over a long period, Warrant Officer Thompson has displayed exceptional qualities of leadership and loyalty. His approach to soldiering, no matter what the conditions, is always of the highest order and has been a constant source of inspiration to all ranks in his company.

We didn’t serve together in VN but we were both recipients of the best ever WO1 course – Inf centre 1970 under the stewardship (Officers aside) of the recently departed Blue Muir, the one and only Don McGregor (whom I served with as the Sig Sgt 5 RAR 1st Tour), and the spit n polished Jack Currie and under the then Centre RSM Arthur Stanley – Oh, what fun and me being just a signaler in the midst of these luminaries of the real army. But I shared a room with the Grey Ghost, Ron Pincott – why did they do that to me? Nevertheless my best memories of a good man, proper soldier and mentor above all else are of soldiers like you – Wally, and indeed others as you know also - Norm Goldspink, Harry Patch, Jock Roy and so many others, of course.

It is with sorrow that we have learnt of the very serious illness of a legend among RAInf personnel and the wider Defence community. His appointment as the first RSM-A was brilliant because he related to all ranks and all Corps, a necessity of the position of RSM-A.

I was a young RASigs Sergeant in the mid-1970’s, living in the 1 Div SGT’s Mess, Enoggera, when Wally made one of his ‘getting to know you’ visits. He was R & Q’d at the 1 Div SGT’s Mess and, after a hard day of liaising with Units / COs / RSMs / SSMs / Troops, he would relax into the night with the ‘living-ins’ and his stories and views were very enlightening and guiding. His record of service speaks for itself and I cannot remember anyone saying a disparaging word about him. The world will be a lesser place when he eventually leaves us.

I have no doubt that Alan and 4 RAR Assn QLD are in contact with the family and will keep us informed as things develop.

It is with much sadness that I pass on the message from David Morris that former Warrant Officer, Wally Thompson OAM, the first RSM of the Army, is gravely ill and probably has only a few days left. In fact, I received a telephone call from Wally a few days ago in which we recounted a lot of experiences that we both shared during our military careers, encompassing the 45th Battalion, the Infantry Centre, 4 RAR The Jungle Training Centre, 4 RAR and of course the 4 RAR Associations.

Wally was in the habit of calling me at least every two months to pass the time of day but his call the other day went deeper than that and lasted a lot longer than usual. I somehow got the feeling, knowing that Wally was very ill, that he was saying farewell. Now, I understand that he was.

Judy his wife, is in care with dementia or Alzheimer's and his daughter is looking after things. As soon as we have some more information we will let you know.

Subject: Update On Kevin McMillan - 6 RAR - (AATTV) Health

Hi Rick,

Kevin is now in the Canterbury Hospital, Sydney, in the Palliative Care Section, after having a fall last Thursday and breaking his hip. They are not going to do a hip replacement due to his illness. He is to remain in hospital for 3 months.

Kevin has been battling cancer for about the last 2 years and his illness is increasingly getting worse. He has been taken off the drug that he was recently on as it was not overcoming the cancer.

Kevin served in 6 RAR Vietnam Jun 69 - Jan 70 and the AATTV (MATT 8) Xuyen Moc Aug 70 - Aug 71.

I visited Jock and Shirley Rutherford today and Jock is not going well.  He has fairly advanced dementia and Shirley is trying to organise for him to go in to full time care.  At present he goes to respite on two days a week plus Blue-Care comes in on a regular basis.

It is sad to see such a top man and soldier in this condition.

Bad news I am afraid. Trevor Gilliver has been very ill for some time and is not improving. He is receiving palliative care in the Cootamundra Hospital (02) 6942 0444.

Trevor served in AATTV from 26 March 1967 to 26 March 1968 with postings to B50, Project Omega, 5th SFGA, Nha Trang and then as a platoon commander and acting company Executive Officer in 23rd Company, B20 Mobile Strike Force, Pleiku. He was the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 4th Battalion, the Royal NSW Regiment from 1977 to 1981 and awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to Army Reserve training on 26 January 1981

Sad news in from Peter Conway, AATTV Qld Branch on the passing on the 16th October 2011 of Maj Colin John Swain RAINF.  Colin served in South Vietnam with AATTV at JWTC, Nui Dat, Phuoc Tuy Province from 1 Jan 71 to 2 Dec 71.

Colin also served in South Vietnam on Visit 17 Mar 64 to 26 May 64 and from 12 Dec 67 to 4 Mar 68 with 3RAR.  From 5 Mar 68 to 23 Jul with HQ 1ATF and from 24 Jul 68 to 10 Dec 68 with 1 ARU.

Jesse served with the AATTV between March 1967 and March 1968. He was with the RF/PF out at Tra Bong. Jesse was then posted to the 5th SF B-50 detachment at Nha Trang and then ended up as a platoon commander with Mike force in Pleiku.

Sad news in on the passing of fellow Team member WO2 later WO1 C.J. ‘Chicka’ Ison BEM,DSM RAINF on 6th October 2011.  Chicka served with AATTV in South Vietnam from Apr 65 to Oct 66 with 1st ARVN Division, Recon Coy, Hue.  He also served with 1st ARVN Division, Reconnaissance Unit Hue from Sep 68 to Feb 69, then with Provincial Recon Unit, Phuot Long to Jun 69, PRU, Phuoc Tuy Province, Baria base to Sep 69.  Then on pre-extension leave from 18 Sep to 18 Oct 69.  Oct 69, PRU, Rung Sat Special Zone, Vung Tau Base.  Apr 70 as Assistant Intelligence WO Dinh Tuong and finally from 3 May to 28 May 70, RF Training, My Tho.

WO2 C.J. Ison was awarded the BEM for service with AATTV in South Vietnam.  His citation reads as follows:

Warrant Officer Class Two Charles Ison, Royal Australian Infantry Corps, joined the Australian Regular Army on 8 May 1953.  Since that date he has served successively with the 3rd, 2n, 1st Battalions, The Royal Australian Regiment and the 1st Battalion Pacific Islands Regiment.  He served in Malaya from 1957 to 1958.
Warrant Officer Ison volunteered for service in Vietnam and in April 1965 joined the Australian Army Training Team.  He was assigned duties as an adviser with the Reconnaissance Company, 1st Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam, and remained in that capacity at his own request until completion of an extended tour of duty totaling 18 months.
Throughout his tenure of duty Warrant Officer Ison distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as advisor to the Reconnaissance Company.
Assuming his duties as advisor, Warrant Officer Ison was quick to grasp the significance of his position and consistently displayed exceptional ability , untiring initiative, and professional competence.  During his tenure, Warrant Officer Ison gave invaluable advice to many Commanders in every aspect that was necessary.  The normal operations conducted by the Reconnaissance Company were by nature, hazardous and carried out in isolation from those supporting forces normally available to an offensive force and were often within known enemy strongly held areas. Warrant Officer Ison displayed outstanding calm and purpose on the numerous occasions when he accompanied this company.  He was frequently subjected to hostile fire, yet he was able to make timely and accurate analysis of intelligence data on information gathered in his operational area, thus increasing the overall effectiveness of the attacking forces.  Warrant Officer Ison consistently displayed an outstand knowledge of reconnaissance activities and willingness to accept additional responsibilities.
At one stage of his duty with 1st Infantry Division, Warrant Officer Ison suggested and was instrumental in achieving and testing, a revised organization for the Reconnaissance Company, significantly increasing it effectiveness in operations.
For his outstanding performance in two separate operations, Warrant Officer Ison was awarded the Vietnamese Cross with Silver Star by the Commanding General, 1st Infantry Division in the field on 13 September 1965 and again on 14 August 1966.
By this exemplary performance of duty, sustained for a period of eighteen months, Warrant Officer Ison has proven to be an invaluable asset to the Free World Advisory effort.  He has continuously displayed unswerving devotion of duty and high personal standards of achievement in the best professional manner.  His accomplishments reflect distinct credit upon himself, the Australian Advisory effort and the Australian Regular Army.

Warrant Officer Class 2 Ison was also awarded the Distinguished Service Medal in the After Vietnam War List.

Chicka will be sadly missed by his family, friends and fellow Team members and our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathies go out to all.

Wally was scheduled for an operation on his right leg, yesterday.  That was postponed until today because of concern about his ability to handle anaesthetic.  At 11.00 am, this morning, they proceeded with the op.  The surgeon  decided not to use anaesthetic, using instead, a spinal block.  Apparently there was extensive muscle damage.   The surgeon has said Wally has a 50/50 chance the leg may have to be amputated.  The next couple of days will tell.

We hold Wally before The Lord and believe for mercy, grace and healing.

He is now in surgery ward 2.

It is with regret that I inform you of the passing of Edward Allan Nicholas on Thursday, 28 April 2011 at the Sydney Adventist Hospital Wahroonga NSW.  Ed was seriously ill for several weeks.

Ed served two tours with the Team, firstly from 23 September 1966 to 31 August 1967 initially as Commander 2 CRP Platoon, 5th SFGA Mike Force Danang and later as S3 B-50 Ready Reaction Company at Nha Trang.  His second tour was from 15 July 1971 to 17 July 1972; initially appointed to the JWTC at Nui Dat, then later to MATT 1 at Baria.  Ed completed his tour with the Phuoc Tuy Training Battalion.

I have been advised it was Ed’s request that he have a private cremation.  A Memorial Service will be held at a time and date yet to be determined.

I will advise details of the Memorial Service as arrangements are confirmed.

Ernie is a patient man, thank goodness.
At long last not only has a date for surgery been confirmed but admission papers have been completed
The Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery will be on  Tuesday 10th May at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Darlinghurst Sydney – it is an all day procedure.
It is expected that Ernie will be in hospital for 2 weeks.
I will be staying nearby in a little studio apartment where I normally stay when I am in Sydney for work, it is within walking distance of the Hospital

Have just got back from holidays in the diaster state of Queensland.  While away, I had contact regarding Graham Hugh King AATTV who was seriously ill in hospital in Adelaide SA.  Graham has been on our lost members list so it was a bit of a shock to hear that he was in hospital critically ill.

Fortunately, he now out of danger and progressing well.  Fellow Team members, John Barnes, Vic Pennington and Ian Hodgson, President of AATTV SA Branch have been on the job and making contact with Graham.

Latest message from Ian Hodgson is as follows:

Good day Rick,   I am sending this information about Graham King, it may help you answer any inquiries about him.  Graham is out of ICU.  He is in Ward Q6 Bed 3 of the Royal Adelaide Hospital.    I visited Graham today, I do not know anything about his illness. Now was not the time to ask, later if he wants to.   He is alone in SA, he moved from Cook Town to Adelaide. I do not know why.  I asked the nurses about his welfare on discharge, because I was concerned about him,  they told me all the various proceedures will be in place when he is discharged. Then there is DVA and TPI Assoc.    I have given Wayne a list of S.A.Branch Committee names and our phone numbers to ring  if he needs assistance.

That's about all I can do at this time..

Update on Wendy.
It has now been eight months since Wendy’s stroke. In this time she has broken her right hip, had two chest infections and had anaemia. Wendy has gone through the gambit of every day insisting she was going home to now accepting that she needs the assistance of trained staff. She has had a few falls and because of this is no longer on a frame but in a wheelchair. She is very thin and not always articulate. Her memory comes and goes, even my name and who I am is not always remembered.

Each Friday I take Wendy out to her hairdresser, she enjoys this. Every Sunday we go to a Vietnamese restaurant and have the same dish every time, just as well that it is great.

The family and friends are on a roster system so there is never a day she does not have visitors. She has gone from reading her novels to reading magazines but this is good. She loves visits from the grand kids, more so than us adults.

We continue to make her go to all the family functions, she tires quickly but I think she enjoys it.

Thank you for your thoughts over the past months.

Elaine and I visited Frank Ghilotti in hospital today.
He was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) by ambulance Thursday night and was admitted to the critical care unit in a critical condition.
In addition to his ongoing respiratory condition he was diagnosed with a nasty bout of pneumonia.
Frank is now out of the critical care unit and is on a general ward (ward 9C) his condition is now described as serious but stable. He is undergoing intensive treatment for the pneumonia
He is allowed visits of two people at a time for short periods of time as his breathing is still somewhat distressed.
We are in contact with Jeanette who is rather stressed and very tired after being by Frank for the last few days at RPH

Message in from Charles Stewart, Secretary SAS Association of the passing on 27th Oct 2010 of fellow Team member 36387 WO2 John (Jack) William Wigg RA INF aged 81 years. Jack served with AATTV in RVN from Jan – Mar 69 with 5th SFGA, 2MSF, as Platoon Commander, Pleiku and from Apr 69 – Jan 70 with Van Kiep LRRP Wing in Phuoc Tuy Province. Whilst with AATTV Jack was injured on 1 Mar 69 and WIA on 3 Mar 69 as a result of a mine incident near Ban Me Thuot.  Jack also served with 3rd SAS Sqn in RVN from 15 Jun 66 to 29 Aug 66.
Our deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of Jack Wigg.  He will be sadly missed.

Cremation service will be held on 2nd November 2010 from 1430hrs.

Sad news just in from Peter Conway AATTV on the passing of fellow Team Member WO2 Robert William Cairns RAINF on the 13th October 2010.

Robert served with AATTV in RVN for Jun 69 to Feb 70 with VDAT, Vinh Long, IV Corps.  From May 70 to Jun 70 with 4/4 ARVN, 2nd Division, Quang Ngai  and with 4th Regt Recon Coy, Quang Ngai from Jul to Sep 70.  He was medivac due to illness in Feb 70 and returned on 30 May 70.  During his time with AATTV he was also awarded foreign awards of the US Bronze Star for Valor (with ‘V’ device), US Bronze Star for Service, US Army Commendation Medal for Service, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry (with Silver Star cluster), Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star.

Belated news but still our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Robert.

Subject: Wendy!

Hi folks, sorry to be a bit slow with an update on Wendy. Wendy has never really settled into the nursing home, her main topic of conversation is when she is coming home. Sadly it does not look like that will be possible. She requires 2 nurses to toilet, bathe and dress her. A task that I cannot do at home alone. Wendy goes through highs and lows, in her lows she is very vicious towards the family, especially me. She blames me for all her problems and been in a home.
When she is on her highs she is wonderful. I take her out Fridays for the hairdresser, Saturdays for an afternoon tea and Sunday for lunch and a visit to some of her friends. Getting her into and out of the car is back breaking but worth it to know she is really happy for a time. She walks with a frame or in some cases a wheelchair. She has taken a love of Vietnamese food so that is our Sunday ritual. She says she thinks she is turning into an Asian.
We take her in food to supplement the home food as it can get a bit tiring.
There is a community room, a large place that is good for mixing and enjoying the entertainment that is provided but Wendy prefers to sit in one of the lounges where she has no one to talk to unless a nurse or carer comes past. She reads and watches TV.
There is never one day where she does not receive a visitor, be it family or friends. We have worked out a roster. One of Wendy's big problem is that I was advised by her doctor to take a couple of days off, she hates that I am not there every day sitting with her for 4 to 5 hours a day. I always feel so much better for the break as I was originally going every day and I was getting stressed. In fact the whole family is saying I should go for a couple of weeks for a holiday.
Wendy is back to reading books and that is a good sign. She speaks well but the memory is not there. When tired she cannot speak well.

Sad news just in from Peter Conway AATTV Qld Br on the passing this day of  WO2 Jack Woods RAINF.  Jack served with 2RAR in RVN from 8 May 67 to 14 May 68.  Jack also served with AATTV from 5 Aug 71 to Sep 71 with MATT 7, Phuoc Tuy, Oct 71 AATTV Vung Tau, Nov 71 NOTT2 Phu Cat, Bin Din Dec 71, AATTV Training Group, Vung Tau and from Jan 72 to 6 Aug 72 with Long Hai Training Battalion.

Jack was awarded the DCM while serving with 2 RAR in RVN, his award reads as follows:

Sergeant Jack Woods joined the Australian Regular Army on 20 June 1960 and after initial training was posted to 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment on 15 December 1960.  He arrived in South Vietnam on 9 May 1967 as the Platoon Sergeant of the 5th Platoon, B Company.
On 27 January 1968, during Operation Coburg in Bien Hoa Province, 5th Platoon contacted twenty enemy and in the ensuing encounter the Platoon Commander was wounded.  Sergeant Woods immediately took command of the platoon and succeeded in forcing the enemy to withdraw so that the casualties could be evacuated.  The platoon had a further contact with fifteen enemy on 28 January 1968 and came under heavy automatic and rocket fire.  Sergeant Woods aggressively led his platoon again forcing the enemy to withdraw leaving their dead and weapons behind.
On 2 February 1968, 5th Platoon was again given the task of assault platoon on an occupied enemy camp.  When the 5th Platoon came under heavy fire from a group of enemy bunkers, Sergeant Woods organised the platoon to provide supporting fire and organised an assault which successfully overran the enemy group killing at least four of the enemy.  As the assault continued the platoon again came under heavy machine gun and rocket fire from more enemy in bunkers.  For two hours Sergeant Woods directed the fire of his platoon into the enemy position, personally engaging the enemy machine gun position with a M72 rocket killing its crew.  During these actions Sergeant Woods displayed a complete disregard for his personal safety to encourage his soldiers and lead them forward by his own example.
The personal conduct of Sergeant Woods and his aggressive actions in commanding his platoon served as an inspiration and example to all members of his platoon and gained the admiration of the remainder of his company.  His high standard of courage and leadership are a credit  to himself, his unit and are of the highest tradition of Australian arms.

Friends and family farewelled Neville John Wilson last week.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MORE than 200 people gathered last week to farewell a loving family man, friend and valued ex-serviceman.

Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL member Neville John Wilson died on 9 September, after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in March.

His wife and children remembered Mr Wilson as a caring man who loved spending time with his family, travelling and doing a range of hobbies, including woodworking and gardening.

Mr Wilson also dedicated much of his time to a number of organisations, including the fire brigade, Legacy, Scout lodge and the RSL.

“He loved his family and would do anything for us,” Mr Wilson’s daughter Sarah said.

“And Legacy and the RSL were important to him. At one stage, he was at the office every day - it was like a full-time job. He was very well-respected.”

President of Legacy South Eastern group Keith Bagley agreed.

“Neville was very proud of his time in Vietnam. He fully supported the Vietnamese Veterans Association,” Mr Bagley said.

“He did his very best for the widows of Legacy, put in many years as a secretary for the group and was a very tireless worker on the committee.

“He was a great friend, who will be sadly missed.”

Helping people was in Mr Wilson’s blood.

From a young age, Mr Wilson was passionate about serving his country.

He attended the Royal Military College from 1955 until 1958, serving in the Australian Regular Army until 1981.

There, Mr Wilson met his wife Jo, who was working as an army nurse.

He served a 12-month tour of duty in Vietnam in 1967-68. He retired with the rank of Major.

Principal units he served included the 3rd Royal Australian Regiment, 7th Royal Australian Regiment, Australian Army Training Team Vietnam and HQ N Command.

His determination and hard work led him to receive a number of significant awards, including the Australian Active Service Medal 1945-1975 with Clasp Vietnam, Infantry Combat Badge, United States of America Meritorious Unit Commendation and Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation.Mr Wilson leaves behind his wife, children Carolyn Ralph, Tony Wilson and Sarah Carmichael and seven grandchildren. Another grandchild is due next week

Nev is also one of the AATTV members that have been recommended to receive the US Presidential Unit Citation for his service in RVN with AATTV.

I visited Nev at home the day after ANZAC Day and left with an impression that he would get through this battle.  However, news in from Sarah and Carolyn paints a rather bleak picture.  Nev is and always will be a close friend.

Nev, Jo and the family are in our prayers at this time and we just home that Nev remains comfortable in pallitive care.

I am Nev's youngest daughter - Sarah.

I thought that I would send you a quick email to update you as to how Dad is.

He has really declined a lot over the last week or so.
He is back in hosptial and has been for the last three weeks.  He was home for two days after recovering from pneumonia, but had to go back in, as the care that he required was far more than what Mum and I could provide.

I spoke with the Doctors at the hospital yesterday, and they have indicated that because of how quickly he has gone down hill, that he probably only has two weeks or so left.

He is relitively comfortable and is not in too much pain - so that is a good thing.

Just updating you on dad's health.  Unfortunately his health has declined considerably, and he is now on IV medication.  His brain tumor has grown back, with him sleeping alot during the day and speaking very little.  As his health is very poor the doctors have decided to not give him anymore radiation or chemo treatment.  He has been for the past few weeks in Wantirna Health (pallative care) and will remain there.

G’day all,

Sad news just in from Peter Conway AATTV Qld Branch on the passing of 12128 WO1 S. (Stan) T. Kent, DCM RAINF who served in South Vietnam with AATTV from 16 Mar 65 with RF/PF, Quang Tri and from Oct 65 to 1 Mar 66 as RSM, Danang.  During his tour of duty with AATTV, Stan was awarded the DCM.  The citation reads as follows:

“Warrant Officer Kent saw active service during the Second World War with the Australian Imperial Forces from 1939 to 1945 and re-enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on 29 June 1951.  Before being posted to South Vietnam, Warrant Officer Kent served as an instructor to National Service trainees and with the Citizen Military Forces as a member of a Regular Army cadre.
Upon arrival in Vietnam on 16 Mar  65, Warrant Officer Kent was assigned to the province of Quang Tri as an adviser to the Vietnamese Regional and Popular Forces.
On 28 May 1965, the 912th Regional Force Company and the Sector Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon were occupying a blocking position outside the hamlet of Van Van in Quang Tri Province.  These units had been in contact with the enemy all day as the Viet Cong were attempting to
break out of a cordon established by regular Vietnamese troops and Regional Forces troops.  Viet Cong pressure on the blocking force increased and at this time the Vietnamese Commander was mortally wounded.  Warrant Officer Kent initially assisted this officer to a more secure area.  When the troops saw that their Commander had been wounded and was being evacuated, they began dropping back from their blocking position in a state of confusion.  Warrant Officer Kent quickly, assessed the situation and immediately and voluntarily returned to the most forward positions, where he exposed himself to hostile fire and to direct observation by the Viet Cong.  He moved about freely reassuring the Vietnamese troops by his presence and urging them to return to their firing positions.  This they did.  His actions transcended the normal requirements of an adviser as he personally imposed leadership directly upon the Vietnamese troops at a time, when had he not done s, the situation would have completely deteriorated.  As a direct result of his actions, the blocking force held their position thus containing the Viet Cong.  At the same time reasonable security was provided for the medical evacuation helicopter land area, enabling casualties to be evacuated quickly.”

After our weekend at Canungra I thought it would be best if I detoured on my way home and went to Ipswich to say farewell to an old mate and a great old  warrior so accordingly Frank Reid and I went to see him yesterday afternoon and told him all about our weekend together and passed on the good wishes of all in the AATTVA . He recognised us immediately and  we watched a replay of one of the weekend Rugby League games together, but it was obvious  his time was nigh. Son Geoff and  daughter Judy are in Ipswich and will advise of funeral details once they are completed. I will pass them on

Hi Folks! Just another update on Wendy. I was lucky to get Wendy into a nice small nursing home 2 weeks ago, she had been in a rehab hospital and was progressing well with her walking.
At the nursing home she settled in well but in the first few days ate in her room by herself. She walking with a frame really well and was getting use to where everything was. There are only 46 patients and get marvelous care. Last Thursday she bent over in her chair to pick up a small piece of paper off the floor when she fell forward and broke her hip.
She is now back in the hospital in Intensive care and in a lot of pain. They put rods into her hip.
I am sorry that I always seem to only be giving bad news but being an ex Army wife and has a big heart she will overcome this latest set back.

Rick I thought I should update the situation with Wendy, As you know she was diagnosed with Pneumonia and infected chest and lungs. Well on day 5 after a brain scan they told me she had a stroke down the right side. She at this stage, day 21, cannot walk but I have been encouraged by some registrars of therapy that she should with rehab walk again. Her memory is a little fuzzy but that also should come back with rehab. At the moment she is in a stroke ward as it is a long weekend but come Tuesday I am hoping some good news on her moving to a rehab location.
Thanks for your interest, I received 6 pages of "get better" from the Team members and a bollocking from Des Campbell for only contacting him when I have bad news.

Folks I just wanted to let you know that Wendy was taken to hospital on Tuesday morning as she had lost the use of her legs and did not know what day or really where she was. Wednesday at 1215 the family was contacted to come to the hospital to see her. She had shut down and our GP was transferring her from Western to QEH where they had access to kidney people.
This morning she has still not come to but she is fighting the infection she has on her chest and lungs. They are working on that first then worry about the kidneys.
Hope I can give you some happier news in the future, I will be in touch.

Sad news just in from Peter Conway AATTV, Qld Branch on the passing today, 28th January 2010 of WO2 Dave Taylor RAAC who served with AATTV in RVN.

Dave served with HQ 1ALSG from 13 Aug 67 until 15 Jan 68 and then with AATTV  at 3/4 ARVN Cavalry, Tam Ky, Quang Tin in Jan 68 and with 2/4 ARVN, Hoi An from Feb 68 until Aug 68.

Our deepest and sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of Dave on this sad occasion

Anyway mate I have been advised of the passing of Dave Taylor in Greenslopes hospital today (Wednesday) .Dave was RAAC and I believe he lived out at Nanango . He served with the Team in 1968
at Tam Ky with the  3/4 ARVN Cavalry..

Sad news in from Bruce Davies AATTV Vic Branch on the passing of Sgt Allan John Miller RAINF who served in South Vietnam with 9RAR from 4 Nov 68 to 19 Nov 69 and with AATTV from 19 Nov 69 to 3 Dec 69.  From Nov 69  on pre-extension leave and then from 13 Jan 70 to Apr 70 with 2nd Battalion 2 MSF, Pleiku and from Apr 70 to Jun 70 with 1st Battalion 2MSF, Pleiku. RTA 9 Jun 70.  Allan Miller was Wounded In Action (WIA) on 18 May 70.

Team members pass their sincerest sympathies and deepest condolences to the family of Allan Miller.

Very sad news received from Peter Conway AATTV Qld Branch on the passing of one of our own, WO1 Don Palmer, OAM, MID on the 24th May 2010 aged 75 years.

Don served with AATTV as a WO2 from Oct 65 to Jan 66 with 5th SFGA A-107 Tra Bong, Quang Ngai.  He also served  with AATTV from Feb to Apr 70 with 3/1ARVN 1st Division, Quang Tri, May 70 with MATT 4, RF Company, Phuoc Tuy and Jul to Dec 70 with MATT 4, Long Dien/An Ngai, Phuoc Tuy.

His awards during his Vietnam service include MID, US Air Medal for Valour (with ‘V’ Device), US Army Commendation Medal for Valour (with ‘V’ Device),  RVN Cross of Gallantry (with Gold Star) and the RVN Cross of Gallantry (with Silver Star).

Citation for MID for Don Palmer reads as follows:

Warrant Officer Palmer enlisted in the Australian Regular Army in 1952 and has served continuously except for a short period in 1958/59.  He has served in Korea and Malaysia.  He joined the Australian Army Training Team in Vietnam in January 1970.
Warrant Officer Palmer served in the 3rd Battalion 1st Regiment of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam in Quang Tri Province for four months.  For the remainder of his tour he has served in Phuoc Tuy Province where he raised and trained a Mobile Advisory Training Team.  In the 3rd Battalion he performed in an outstanding manner.  His professional competence and coolness under fire enabled him on several occasions to make a significant contribution to the success of the Battalion's operations.  In his work with the Mobile Advisory Training Team over a period of seven months he has maintained a consistently high standard of performance of his duties in particular in trying circumstances.  He has displayed enthusiasm and a preparedness to try innovations to achieve an upgrading of the standard of the Territorial Forces he has been associated with.  His service has been distinguished by his devotion to duty and the unfailing loyalty he has given to his Commanders.
His work has been characterised by the outstanding efforts he has made to establish good will and to achieve an excellent rapport with his Vietnamese counterparts.
Warrant Officer Palmer's untiring efforts, his devotion to duty, loyalty and courage under fire have earned the highest respect of all his Vietnamese, American and Australian associates and reflect great credit on himself, the Australian Army Training Team in Vietnam and the Australian Army.

Don a thorough gentleman and well respected member of AATTV will be sadly missed by us all.  Sincerest and deepest condolences to his family and friends at his sad passing.

I received sad news yesterday (13th May 2010) from Townsville Bulletin newspaper reporter, Nathan Paull on the tragic passing, in a motor vehicle accident, of Cpl Graham ‘Snowy’ Rae, AATTV on 12th May 2010 in Cardwell, Qld.. Very sad circumstances indeed, his dog Bundy survived the accident..

214113 Cpl Graham ‘Snowy’ Wesley Rae, RAINF served in Phuoc Tuy Province with AATTV from 7 Aug 70 with MATT 7, Ong Trinh,
MATT 1, Bin Ba during Sep - Nov 70 and at JWTC , Nui Dat from Feb to Jul 71 and RTA on 5 Aug 71. He also served from 12 Dec 66 to 2 Jan 67 with 1 ARU, 3 Jan 67 to 30 May 67 with 6 RAR and 31 May 67 to 13 Dec 67 with 7 RAR.  He may have been a Lance Corporal while serving with the battalions.

I personally knew Snow as an affable and outgoing person and he will be sadly missed by his fellow Team members. Our deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences go out to the family of Snow on this very sad occasion.

I dropped in to see Nev on 26th April 2010 after meeting up with the Vic AATTV mob on ANZAC Day in Melbourne.
 

Nev is on the improve and I left him with a gut feeling that he will get through this battle.  Nev is very alert and chomping at the bit to get back into golf, working around his block and to meet up again with his fellow Team mates.

Had a good chat with Nev earlier. He sounds very good and has been in Ringwood Private Hospital.
He expects to go home tomorrow (Wed 7th) PM.
Will be back at Ringwood Private - (03) 8804 4000 next Monday for a week, for commencement of Chemo & Radiation. Thereafter it will probably be a daily visit for the next several months.

The Head Oncologist hopes he may only need 3 or 4 months of this. If so - great news for Nev. He asked to thank everyone who forwarded cards. He won't be able to make Anzac Day, but hopes to attend the Team memorial Service at the Shrine in August. I told him we would toast him with his share of the Red Wine!

Again thankyou to everyone for Nev's well wishes.  Unfortunately there has been a slight set back.  He was due to get transferred to Knox Private yesterday (a lot closer to home), however began to have chest pains.  After a scan the doctors found a deep vein thrombosis, so now Nev is back into the intensive care ward at Melbourne Private on a drip of heparin.  Hopefully he get to Knox in a few days.

Many thanks for every bodies well wishes for Nev .  He had his operation yesterday and is now recovering.  The surgeon removed all of the tumor that he could see, and dad will have another brain scan in the next few days to determine how much was left behind.  The biopsy from the tumor should also come back in the next few days to determine whether it is cancerous (and if so he will start chemo / radiation in approx 4 weeks).
    Mum and I visited dad today; his speech is a lot better, and he is even walking to the toilet.
So far so good.

Have just been informed by Jo Wilson that Nev has been admitted to Royal Melbourne Hosp with a brain tumour.
He can’t be operated on till Saturday due to the fact that he has been on aspirin.
They are not sure at this stage if it is a primary or secondary, more tests needed, as I hear more  I’ll let you know.

I spent about 2hrs with Nev this arvo. He was finding it a bit hard to concentrate on things, however generally in a positive mode - albeit worried about Saturday's Op. He was on Warfarin, hence the delay. He has had about 3 minor Strokes over the past 4 months, last being last week which prompted the further investigation.
Apparently scans and MRI's say it is a "Primary" Tumour. He was told to expect Chemo & Radiology following the Op.

Just some detail to pass on:
1. He is in Royal Melbourne PRIVATE Hospital, 8th Floor, Room 12.
2. His direct Ph Number is (03) 8341 3583 - only for tomorrow Friday 19th between 1500hrs & 2000hrs. (or tonight till 2000hrs)
3. After tomorrow, Jo can be contacted on (03) 9764 4614 for progress reports.
As there may be a few who would like to make contact, would be appreciated if you could circulate tonight.

Sad news below from Vic Pennington AATTV on the passing of WO2 William ‘Bill’ James French RAA who served with AATTV in South Vietnam.  Bill served at MATT1, Van Kiep,  Phuoc Tuy Province Jul to Dec 1972. Bill retired as a WO1 Master Gunner.
